Born June 28, 1918, Edna Kohn was the daughter of Samuel and Rose Stein. The photo to the right, taken about 1921, shows Edna and her older brother, Harold, with their parents. The siblings were later joined by a third child, Barney.

Edna met future husband, Al Kohn, on a train. According to Al, while getting up for a few minutes for a stretch, he left his camera on his seat. When he returned, Edna commented on the carelessness of leaving his belongings unattended. The photo to the right was taken in 1942, soon after the start of World War II, when the couple were about 24 years old.
